Part Three
A couple days ago they started arriving to the Beyond Human
Immigration Center in Cork Ireland. Refugees have already starting calling it
The Smyrna Colony after the first one who arrived who was a Greek man.
From all over the world, from the United States, Japan,
Iran, all looking for a new chance at life, all have left their native
countries seeking a future were before for most it just seemed like it was a
present waiting for the end to come.
Coming to Cork has propelled them into a new way of life.
The dream of finding a home, finding a place that wants them isn’t just a
notion now, now it’s a fact.
The people of Cork are fully embracing the refuges also. The
government has created a lot of new jobs building new housing for the newcomers
and a military base in Cork for their mandatory military service.
From the beginning this initiative by the Republic Of
Ireland has been as much an economic endeavor as a humanitarian one. And that
is probably the smartest way they could have approached this.
The government selected Cork because of the recent hard
times the city had found itself in after an unprecedented storm hit it. Besides
building the new military base, immigration center, and refuge housing, the
government also rebuilt basically everything else damaged by the city making
Cork into one of the most modern cities in Europe.
They have also moved in other industries to keep the city
strong. Everything from agriculture to electronic businesses.
When the government first proposed this idea to the people
of Cork, as the people stood in the destruction of their city, some withdraw to
other parts of the country but most of the people of the city stood firm with
their city.
The government was preparing for a huge amount of refuges.
Even if the house and base in Cork fills they have plans for continuing this
operation in other locations. But those locations are a top tier secret for
now.
As the world talks about what the Republic Of Ireland is
doing they are charging forward. Their leadership has made this a priority to
strengthen their nation in the modern world.
As refuges arrive in The Smyrna Colony they find themselves
gifted with a choice of new clothing. A new cell phone. And a totally new
identity if that’s what they want. Ireland is offering them a totally new start
if they want it.
The first ship of refuges came from North America. It was
actually stopped in American waters by the U.S. Navy until a court order after
pressure internationally released it. When word of this quickly reached the
Irish Prime Minister they made a stern statement.
‘You get one. That was one. The day these people made their
decision to come here, not when they get here and go through government red
tape, the day they made their decision they became Irish citizens.’
The U.S. response…well, the response off the record and in
closed doors was, “Fucking Ireland.”
Both of those statements actually fevered up the talk all
over the world. The U.S. response of course got out because someone tweeted it
two minutes after the president said it.
Some countries are canceling all private plane flights and
boat traffic because they see this as only one thing, that the Irish are
building an army to go to war. Others are cutting ties with The Republic Of
Ireland, but most are just trying to say stern things that most people,
including Ireland are ignoring.
Among the first couple groups of Beyond Human refugees were
sisters from a small town in Canada. This wasn’t the first time these sisters
have come to a country as refuges but it is the first time it was totally by
their planning and their choice to do so.
Immigration places are always a bit depressing and dark.
Don’t believe me visit Ellis Island and try to walk out not feeling like you
want to slit your wrists.
But the Cork Immigration Facility was different. Airports
and bus stations were way more depressing than this place. All by design of
course. When you arrive you’re given food and drink, what kind by your choice.
All lines also have seats beside each spot so each person in line has a place
to sit if they want to do so. Also when they first arrive the refuges are given
tablet devices so they can read, surf online, play games or watch a movie or TV
show.
Briar and Apple had just made their way through the first
stage of immigration processing and now are waiting for their ability
interviews. Then it will be the identity stage before getting new cloths and a
new phone and housing assignment. They will have a month to assimilate to their
new home before entering the military.
‘So when do we break off and start the hunt? I say we wait
until we get our free iPhones then make a run for it,’ Briar
‘We are being paid to integrate ourselves in this new army
of theirs and wait for the signal,’ Apple
‘So we are going to be good refuges for a while?’ Briar
‘That’s the plan,’ Apple
‘I do love play acting,’ Briar
‘We will have to be very careful when we eat,’ Apple
‘Napkins all around,’ Briar
‘And make sure you tie off bags of leftovers. Don’t want to
attract flies,’ Apple
