A First Shot Fired
Part 10

BREAKING NEWS: Did the CIA target rescuers at sites of drone attacks in Afghanistan? …

BREAKING NEWS: Nebraska candidate for governor blames rape of three elderly women on too relaxed laws on Beyond Humans even though the men caught who raped them have been proven to have no Beyond Human abilities…

BREAKING NEWS: Being unemployed sucks, being called for jury duty when you had a chance at a job interview really sucks…

Some would say the very nature of trying to live in the modern world is an adaption to chaos. It’s about being able to shape your steps without the formula of what has directed the course of the past. Our questions for surviving the future may have to do with how well we can finger paint turmoil and not come out of it with it being an exercise for the insane.
The fear of this has more and more people reaching for some sort of uniformity to make them feel comfortable about the way the course of history is going. Human nature has always been one of safety within a comfort zone. That’s why hunger, bigotry, and imperial nationalism still exists.
Uniformity just sounds like a bad word doesn’t it? Well, it does to me. Just one of those words when spoken, heard, or read tweeks at the things that tell you this isn’t right. Ok, it doesn’t affect you in that way but it does really bother others in extremes. It has that effect on Chris Friday also.
And that’s the way a lot of other humans see it. Just get over yourself because that is the way a lot of humans see it. Seems that a lot of the discourse in the world today is about whether adaption and a giving up identity are worth security and protection.
The reasons behind a lot of human conflict and violence can come down to some sort of fight against some form or another of uniformity, even though most of the time these fights lead to an embracement of another form of uniformity to try and accomplish goals.
Humans are just a strange.
To a lot of us any talk of uniform… it just irks. It’s nasty and compels you to rebel against even using it in a sentence. This reaction is just something that exists within some people and maybe at the core of what drives humanities progress and has always been since the first chemical reaction.
When you play around with the definition of Uniformitarianism, “An assumption that the same natural laws and processes that operate in the universe now have operated in the universe in the past and apply everywhere in the universe.” You might come out of that definition knowing why uniformity is such an attraction to so many and also why it’s such a repellant to so many others.
Uniformitarianism was coined by William Whewell. You can Wikipedia him, I did, then I forgot most of what I read about him. He is the same theologian who came up with the term catastrophism as a set of ideas that the Earth is shaped by a series of sudden violent acts.
When I think of that with Uniformity I think about a society that preaches individuality but not at the price of a strong uniform system, no matter if said system is broken or corrupt. Denying our basic way of being, which is that violent causes a sort of violence that lives in uniformity, lives in stagnation.
We wear uniformity comfortably because we deny the violent nature that shapes our lives. It’s an imprisonment of hope. From giving in to the slow turn to losing rights right out from under us to the lies of depression.
The military functions on uniformity, a lot of jobs are done well only by the way of uniformity. But it’s not just in the military and our jobs where we confirm. You can see why uniformity is needed in those places, hell the whole social contract is confirmed to a set way of living life.
We confirm in what knowledge we except out of stupidity, in our beliefs out of fear, and in the things that entertain us… well, also out of stupidity. Why else would reality TV be so popular.
In the modern world we have disguised uniformity in false individuality as we strive to create a personal brand identity in hopes that others will like it and dress themselves in our personal skins. For examples see Twitter, Facebook, Cafépress, Blogger. One of the biggest goals a lot of people have is celebrity, to be part of a pack of superstars.
So out of that culture mindset they are those who might just be one of our few hopes left of true individuality. They are schisms in the box that so many are agreeing to live within.
Banks, Darryl, and Faith are creatures of identity destruction. Even though they don’t have any Beyond Human powers as such, they are very comparable to legendary Chameleons, though Chameleons with dissociative identity disorder.
They change almost everything they are on a daily basis. This is how they have survived off the grid for so long. Around their few friends the changes are mainly of cloths, like/dislikes, and stories of their pasts.
If Chris or Sergeant Luke want a straight answer they have to use a daily code word giving to each of them every morning, otherwise it’s a task of interacting with a different person, a stranger, who you have a day to get to know and get inside to see how they operate every day.
This at first drove Sergeant Luke crazy but slowly he has been seeing the possibilities this might offer them in the future.
How they got to this way of living isn’t known. They aren’t sharing and even if they did you probably couldn’t believe them. The two other friends of theirs that Chris might both had two different stories. One that they are all siblings wanted by the government, the other that they escaped a government facility and are now on the run.
Neither of those are the truth but let’s play in a little mystery from time to time for fun.
One of the few character traits they keep with each identity is loyalty to their few friends.
I just thought about it but what do you think, wouldn’t Identity Destruction make a great rock band name?
Whether either Banks, Darryl, and Faith actually suffer from dissociative identity disorder is unknown but Chris doesn’t think so because they talk about the switches of identity traits from time to time like it’s a character they are portraying in a 24/7 play but a different role each day.
Sergeant Luke wished his undercover cops were even close to this good adapting a new identity as these three were.
Since getting a straight answer from any of them, even when using the given code word, about their pasts is near impossible he hasn’t even thought much about if they are this way because of a severe trauma. His personal theory is the world has just cracked them in a different way than it cracked him or Chris.
No matter what one thing remains the same about each of them and that is Banks is a doctor and sometimes a nurse, Darryl is an all-around genius, and Faith is a hacker beyond measure.
Chris had meet each of them, several times each in fact, before a mutual friend introduced them at an underground club for hackers and those trying to stay away from Big Brother Reach and the like.
Big Brother Reach being the codename for the N.S.A.’s raw information gathering operation that is also developing an A.I. component.
But I’m just telling you that as an FYI and because it’s something I’d like to explore sometime in the future.
Today has been mainly a rest day for Chris after pretty much day after day of training in one shape or form but it is also a day that he has been eyeing for a while now.
Ever since they put together their base team Sergeant Luke has been avoiding Banks, Darryl, and Faith as much as he can.
He has had to work with them a lot but honestly they creep him out a lot.
So with a few days off from training Chris has used the time to try, as much as he can, to get to know his team and lunch is always good for conversation, even if you are having lunch with an unfamiliar person each time you sit down.
‘It’s been a weekend since…,’ Chris
‘You and the sergeant went all fisticuffs.,’ Banks
‘Yea, and I’m still bruised all over,’ Chris
Chris and Banks were eating in the Popeys Pillar base cafeteria. A baby blue painted large room with lots of tables and chairs and a well-stocked kitchen. Once it offered meals to military men, now its meals go towards five individuals on a mission of their own.
People talk about an army marching on its stomach and that’s one of the reasons the cafeteria was one of the first sections of the base Sergeant Luke wanted to get back up and running like new.
It took three days for Sergeant Luke to get everything cleaned up and ready to work. Darryl helped a lot with that. Though having a helpful technician one day and a pig headed one the next did slow down things a bit. Good thing all were still geniuses either way.
They all cook from time to time but Darryl has become the main cook adapting a different chef personality for each day’s menu when he cooked. A genius in the kitchen can be a truly amazing thing no matter what he’s cooking because cooking is chemistry after all.
The piss angry British stereotype chef personality is one that they never like when one of those pops up. It always has everyone deciding on cereal, hotdogs, and instant noodles on those days.
Today for lunch is southern fried chicken with smashed bacon tators and beers.
‘You have nothing broken except for a slightly cracked rib,’ Banks said from her sports doctor personality of today.
‘Slightly cracked says the person who doesn’t have a cracked rib,’ Chris
‘Just need to needle you up at game time is all,’ Banks
Darryl brings their food and sits down with them, ‘Eat up, a lot of good lard in that chicken.’
Like any good southern chef he ate as he cooked and tested the food.
Banks started in on her plate but Chris was just staring at his. He wasn’t distracted with a fear kind of worry but a possible embarrassment sort of worry. Very high school.
‘Today, isn’t it uniform day?’ Darryl
‘I’ve been dreading this,’ Chris as he played with his smashed tators.
The intercom system whistled on, ‘Chris, I need you in the Staging Area.’
Chris chugged his beer in one go and then stood, ‘I’m surprised Faith isn’t around for this?’
‘No matter the personality, hackers are never very social,’ Banks said showing one of the signs that cropped up that they totally understand what they’re doing.
Chris exited the cafeteria heading for the Staging Area. He should have eaten earlier, that fried chicken looked good and it’s never as good the next day.
The Staging Area is the place you go before heading out on a mission. A place to check your equipment and get any last minute instructions. Also called a Go Area or a Time To Puke Area as a lot of people do that right before a mission.
Chris couldn’t help but see the symbolism in the place where Sergeant Luke would be showing him his combat uniform. After all symbolism is the whole point of him wearing a uniform in the first place.
On the walk there Chris thought about how all of this started. About the lessons, the bruises, and the long overnight talks about what they were going. What could happen, what was probably going to happen, good and bad.
Today is the beginning of tomorrow and tomorrow being chaos, tomorrow is the fight against the uniformity of good enough.

A First Shot Fired
Part 9

BREAKING NEWS: Group of Cardinals say if Pope starts reaching towards the modern world his position will be rethought by those who put him there. These comments come after the Pope surprisingly said, “We cannot let our fear of Beyond Human separate us from our own humanity.”…

BREAKING NEWS: Heath care providers in some hospitals in Seattle are saying if more laws are passed against treating Beyond Humans and reporting them they will be forced to go against the law and will do so willingly…

BREAKING NEWS: Woman whose husband was found to be a Beyond Human while serving in the military goes to court to try and get information on his location since being arrested by his fellow soldiers. Senator says her pursuit of this information should be seen as treason in itself…

No matter how you want to twist the thinking when it comes to law enforcement or being a soldier it is a life atmosphere in violence. This is the reason why to survive in law enforcement, officers tend to develop pretty twisted since of humors.
This is also why police and military love to tell stories but here’s something most people don’t know. The stories they tell are to hide the things they don’t want to talk about.
Living a life dipped in violence at any moment requires a person to develop coping mechanisms whether they are fucked up jokes, drunken stories, or even sometimes like something out of an old shore leave movie with a bar fight or two.
If you asked Sergeant Luke what was the worst fight he had ever been in, he would probably tell you about some fight when he was in the police academy or during a football game in high school, but if he was honest this story would be what he would tell you.
Also of course he was in the military and a mere private during the time of this story so this is about Private Luke.
Private Luke was a young man with broad shoulders. He was heavily recruited by a number of colleges to play football but he wanted to join the military. To serve his country during very chaotic times was very important to him.
He went into the military thinking it would be a lot like football. Hard days training but also a building of lifelong friendships. He thought it would be about people dedicated to one goal, and in the case of the military he thought that goal would be the protection of freedom.
There were a lot of fellow soldiers who thought the same as he did but what he never expected were the bloodlusting ones. The men and women who were itching at the chance to kill people and not be arrested for it. Not itching to get at some enemy but just whoever was placed in front of them.
He quickly learned this wasn’t the world of high school football.
Or the world of John Wayne movie.
More like something by the overstuffed Oliver Stone.
The training of basic training wasn’t that bad for him. His high school football coach had actually based their Two-A-Day practices during the summer and after school during the school year on his own experiences in the military.
But after only a few months Private Luke found out he was among a bunch of very nasty people.
The ring leader of this bunch was one Private Saul.
Out of every group of new recruits there are usually one or two real standouts. In this group the two were Private Luke and Private Saul. This fact and the fact that Private Luke didn’t take part in their talk of raping woman and killing like it was a sport, and not to mention the torturing of lesser recruits, this put Saul and Luke in a direction heading right at each other and it was only a matter of time.
Private Saul saw Luke as a threat to his own bullying of the other recruits and a threat to him being the golden boy of their drill sergeant, Sergeant Tucker.
Sergeant Tucker turned a blind eye to what Private Saul and his underlings were doing, he saw it as survival training within the group. He hoped Luke would step up and be one of the strong but had his doubts after Private Luke reported some of what Saul had been doing and saying over Tucker’s head.
So with that insult in mind Sergeant Tucker set up a lesson to be taught, and one was taught, just not the one he was thinking.
Sergeant Tucker had forged papers that showed Saul was on the other side of the base with him but in fact he was heading for a storage unit with two of his cronies, a storage unit were Private Luke was taking inventory after a break in two nights before.
Guess who did the break in?
The storage unit was about the size of good sized backyard storage shed. It contained for the most part military manuals on everything from kitchen equipment to personal weapon usage.
Luke was going through each box and counting against inventory lists of what should be there when the door shut behind him. He turned and in the small light of the shed spotted Saul.
Saul’s two friends where standing outside the storage shed to make sure they could alert Saul in case someone not part of their plan showed up.
Luke had watched Saul in training. He was well trained in MMA hand to hand combat techniques. Sergeant Tucker had even started having Saul show the other recruits a trick or two which Saul loved, he was shown before the others to be superior to them and also got to break some bones on order.
He was also twice the size of Luke, nothing but muscle, and every move he made was about strength, about large strikes.
He had made a mistake choosing this as the place to confront Luke.
Despite his MMA training Luke had seen Saul fight, and he was always thinking about maneuvers. He could see when a weakness came up it was because people had made him face something he wouldn’t normally face in training or a MMA match.
Saul started moving towards Luke but Luke quickly jumped up and punched the free hanging light bulb and when it went out he know what his next move was going to be before his feet hit the ground.
He knew Saul would be trying to grab him in a standing position so he landed not on his feet but his knees and immediately punched his enemy in the nuts as hard as he could.
He could hear Saul stumble back against the door and shouting profanities so he knew his punches hit the spot really nice.
Outside Saul’s cronies were smiling thinking their friend was kicking the shit out of Luke.
Saul charged across the dark storage unit in a rage and with all the profanity Luke was able to pretty accurately time an elbow right to the face which dislocated his elbow but shattered Saul’s face into many broken pieces. A shattered nose, broken orbital bone, and split jaw.
In a couple minutes Private Saul passed out from the pain but that was only after Luke stomped on his face a couple more times.
Then Private Luke had to decide what he was going to do about the guys waiting outside. He knew how Saul and his bunch operated and knew they had to be at least a couple of them out there waiting for their friend to emerge and talk about how much pain he had put Luke through.
Luke reached to push the door open and get this over with when he was grabbed from behind. He had a quick thought of Saul being one tough mother fucker but throwing back some head butts to already shattered face make him let go and collapse to his knees and then face first onto the floor.
Luke kicked the door open and started dragging Saul out. The two buddies just looked on. They wanted to attack but the sight of Saul in that sort of shape scared them so they watched as Luke dragged him across the grounds, three buildings down to Sergeant Tucker’s quarters.
Luke dropped him there and knocked on the door and walked to the stockade and waited.
The trail found Luke innocent of an attempted murder charge that Sergeant Tucker had pushed for. Further investigation uncovered Sergeant Tucker’s involved in the incident and he was dishonorably discharged.
The worst fight Luke ever was ever in was the fight he fought every day in the military after going against the grain but it was a lesson he did learn. Authority and law are not always right.

What’s about to happen will probably be one of those moments that Sergeant Luke and Chris keep for the most part to themselves. It’s going to get really personal because make no bones about it violence is always personal, otherwise you would end up dead trying to play moral standard playset.
Sergeant Luke and Chris were riding down in a freight elevator to the training floor of Pompeys Pillar. The elevator was playing old big band tunes. They have tried to track the wiring to find out where the music came from but so far they had no luck.
Sergeant Luke had just explained to Chris the next stage in their plan and you would expect them to be tense but they actually weren’t. Sergeant Luke noticed that and was happy Chris’s training was coming along to the point where he was able to be calm right now.
‘No holds barred?’ Chris asked.
‘Until one of us taps out, says no more.’ Sergeant Luke make the point clear with his words.
‘So is this my coming out party?’ Chris
‘More like one of several final tests.’ Sergeant Luke told him.
‘And if I fail any of them?’ Chris
‘It’s over before it starts.’ Sergeant Luke
‘No holds barred?’ Chris
‘Yep.’ Sergeant Luke
Chris went for an elbow strike to the head but Luke ducked and the elbow hit the elevator. By the time that happen Luke had taken Chris’s legs out from under him with a shin kick.
Luke tried to gain a mount position on Chris but the door had opened and Chris rolled out into the training area.
Sergeant Luke noted in his own head how Chris’s scramble instincts were improving.
They both returned to a standing position smiling at each other. It takes a certain kind of person to get a kick out of this sort of thing.
‘Are you sure you really want to do this?’ Chris asked, yes still smiling.
‘Are you scared Banks won’t be able to patch you up?’ Sergeant Luke asked the young man he was training.
‘Trying to jolt me old man?’
‘Trying to get me pissed kid? You don’t have any moves I didn’t teach you.’
They moved in towards each other.
Luke knew this was the answer to his question. Will this end before it even got started? If Chris can’t stand against him then he isn’t the man for this mission. If he can’t get through this, he would just get them killed at a later point because he wasn’t good enough.
Chris swung, Luke spun away from the punch and in the same second he went for a spin kick but Chris hit his knees to duck it and then got on his back to dodge another kick.
Chris kicked up from his back going for Luke’s knees but Luke deflected the series of quick kicks.
Luke went in for a punch but Chris rolled away, the punch hit the floor, and quickly both men were back to their feet.
A restart and more smiles to try and psyche out the other one but they knew it wouldn’t work on each other. The smiles were more a are you getting into this because I’m really getting into this.
Luke walked over to one of the walls in the training room and pulled down two daggers. The room was decorated with all kinds of handheld weapons.
He slid one of the daggers on the floor over to Chris.
‘Your hand to hand unarmed is good but this is America, no one comes at you with bad intentions unarmed,’ Sergeant Luke
Chris picked up the dagger, ‘Blades?’
‘You can use a blade to cut, disable, torture, or kill. You make those choices in a moment.’
Chris watched Luke as they sized each other up. He knew Luke was going for the kill. This was an end lesson he needed to survive to pass. This wasn’t about them not being able to do this and going their separate ways, there was this or failure for both of them.
Luke went for a stabbing thrust with his dagger. Chris was distracted blocking that blow so that allowed Luck the opportunity to sneak in a kick to the ribs.
Chris thought he heard a crack but tried not to give anything away in case Luke didn’t hear it.
As he moved Chris thought he could feel part of his ribs rubbing up against other parts and it hurt.
‘That was probably a rib. Even a small crack will take your breathing down ten percent,’ Sergeant Luke explained to his acolyte.
He did notice.
This wasn’t good for the student.
Chris tosses away the dagger knowing he needed to change things up and go for something blunter so he pulled two maces off a wall. He dropped one and backed away from it.
‘Maces don’t give you much wiggle room?’ Sergeant Luke
‘Most final exams don’t have a do over or did I miss hear and you’re grading on a curve?’ Chris
‘I thought for a while this is when it was going to end. That you couldn’t take these steps,’ Sergeant Luke
‘I’m flattered you thought I would fail,’ Chris said, no longer smiling.
‘I didn’t think you were going to fail, just that you wouldn’t take the next step against another human being.’
‘So you trained me and pushed me into a situation where I will bash your head in?’
‘What you should have said is, try to bash my head in.’
They run at each other, maces in hand, but Chris jumps in the air dropkicking Luke in the face Brad Armstrong style.
He learned almost everything he knows from Sergeant Luke but he also watched a lot of Smokey Mountain Wrestling.
As Sergeant Luke tumbled backward from the dropkick his mace flew out of his hand hitting the ground with a big thud. Chris had totally caught him off guard.
Chris picked up the other mace without hesitation. Then he ran over to Luke and started trying to take out his legs slamming them down one after the other.
Luke scrambled and dove under a table covered in throwing knives. He kicked the table up sending knives and the table flying hard against Chris.
They both stood up, but now both were tired, but Chris more so. Swinging both of those maces took a lot out of him.
‘Control your breathing during a fight, especially if you have a cracked rib,’ Sergeant Luke told him.
‘No more toys?’ Chris asked his teacher.
‘Ok with me.’ Sergeant Luke answered.
Luke ran over and tackled Chris. He was going to see how his student could handle pure brutality and how much he was willing to give back to someone.
Here endth this lesson.

A First Shot Fired
Part 8

BREAKING NEWS: Civil War in Egypt heats up with many in the region saying someone has to step in before it’s too late. The White House has once again stated that in no fashion up to and including Pulpy will the U.S. get involved in this conflict and that the two parties driving this war need to stop it themselves.

BREAKING NEWS: In the U.S. the state of Georgia is set to execute another mentally handicapped criminal in what most say is another state push back against federal laws that they say are infringing on their rights.

BREAKING NEWS: A series of church arsons against Jewish and Muslim dwellings continue in North Carolina and in response state senator Krissy Joiner, “That what happens when these fringe religions try to upset the true God.”

Everyone’s first fight, besides high school scraps; which are more like puppy love than a real fight, that first real fight is something that sticks with a person forever.
Sure in some instances in high school there can be fights that end up with a lot of blood being spilled but that’s as rare as marrying your high school sweet heart and living happily ever after.
The first time your brain, even maybe for only a second, clicks into a state of survival at any cost during a fight it’s never erased from your brain. That second, that moment is burned in there. It might be burned into a place that your brain doesn’t scratch that often but it will always be there.
Sometime this brain click manifests itself by laying in a fetal position on the ground but most people at least get a swing in or some words out. Survival can start or end both on your feet or on the ground. The choice of what will come from you is something you are born with.
The first time Chris had ever felt a touch of the survival instinct was just a few months after high school. Well, there was that time in fifth grade when the man tried to snatch him when his family was at a park but his brain was too young and trusting at the time to even understand.
His dad broke the guys face.
Chris on the day I’m talking about was leaving a pizza buffet after a good meal of six kinds of pizza. He went there alone celebrating finally being out of high school and thinking about what future he might have, if any at all. He was kind of in the middle of thinking the future was hopeful and that it had no hope and he should just kill himself.
Funny enough that was the point after which when he started eating healthier. He went a little uptight vegetarian to push back against things that reminded him of that night.
Most of our decisions are based off little subconscious ways of dealing with things that have happen to us.
Chris crossed the street from the pizza buffet to where the overnight bus line stopped, and right out of a bad Netflix movie you’d only watch because you need background noise while working on something else, he was surrounded by street thugs.
The thugs in reality were themselves on their way home from a party to catch the same bus. Thugs kind of mislead you into thinking they were rooming criminals but here is a little fact that is nasty part of the human condition. Most random crimes aren’t committed by rooming criminals but by rooming everyday people who found themselves with a taste in their mouths to hurt someone else, most of the time someone they have never meet before.
They spotted Chris and their instincts took over. The instincts of the hunt of someone perceived as weaker. But this wasn’t a hunt, this wasn’t anything like that, when modern men try to paint themselves as hunters while having their prey back into a corner, or in a pay pond, or at a hunting range is a special form of cowardice.
The thugs all were slurring their threats towards Chris. He was surrounded by an overwhelming bar smell and a gut feeling telling him what’s about to go down and that same gut is speaking truths like that this isn’t a win situation but a survival one.
Chris looked around but no one else was in sight. You can truly feel in your bones just how empty streets can be at night when you find yourself surrounded by people you know aren’t there for a group hug or to talk about the news.
His father had taught him how to defend himself so maybe four drunks wouldn’t hurt him too bad. The things that go through your head when you about to get your ass kicked. Some people even think that someone might show up at the last second to rescue them. Both kind of daff things to have running through you head as someone tells you they are about to make you bleed.
And his father may have taught him how to defend himself but it’s not like his father was some kind of martial arts expert who went through a quick course Karate Kid style that had him kicking ass and taking names in a few weeks.
What his father taught him is what I also learned from my father. That there is no such thing as a fair fight. There is a fight between two forces and one almost always is more powerful than the other. You do what you have to do to get yourself out of a situation alive, especially if you are outnumbered or outgunned.
Chris had nothing in his pockets to defend himself with. His keys could be used but he’d have to get really close for that and any movement he made to his pockets would probably bring them in to attack.
He glanced around but there wasn’t anything he could pick up and use as a weapon. No trash can lid or stray board with a nail in it in grabbing distance.
But Chris’s father didn’t just teach his son how to defend himself. He taught his whole family and friends. He also did a class for the local neighborhood watch group. Remembering one memory about a lesson his father gave a female friend in using her purse as a weapon reminded him that he was carrying his mail bag and all the notebooks within it. He carries it with him everywhere and most of the times it’s like just another piece of clothing. You could use a shirt or a belt as a weapon but most of the time people never think to do so.
One of the thugs went to grab Chris, and to be truthful the grab for was more like a stagger toward, but with one big swing of his mail bag Chris knocked him out cold.
Though the big swing of the bag took him off balance and allowed another thug to grab him from behind. They all started shouting things at Chris but his eyes were focused on the man on the ground and listening to the fast beats of his own heart.
Chris struggled but couldn’t break the guys grip. The one that had a hold of him was built like a bear. He probably couldn’t break free from a skinny guy either but this big one kept him from even struggling much at all.
The other two thugs started taking turns punching him when they saw he wasn’t reacting to the things they were saying to him. The first couple were glancing blows that caught him on the side of the head and jaw but the first solid blow hid him in the center of his face breaking his nose. The next two solid into each eye. After those the punches really didn’t have the same sort of impact for lack of better phrasing.
They punched themselves tired after about 15 minutes. Blows to his ears had him only hearing a ringing through most of it but by the time he was dropped to the ground and they got in a few kicks each his hearing cleared up.
Chris couldn’t see, his eyes had already swollen shut but he could hear their footsteps and laughter as they walked away dragging their knocked out friend with them like he had just had too much to drink at the bar.
At least that’s what the police would tell him when he talked to them. Guys out who had too much to drink. That was the reasoning. Not that human beings all have a bit of cruelty inside of them and it can come out at random moments when they see a weakness in another person.
That’s what most bullying is. That’s what a lot of murder is. And that has been behind a lot of wars.
At that moment as Chris was laying there he understood words spoken to him once by his father, “A lot of people enjoy hurting others. They are more animal than Sparky is.”
Sparky was their family pitbull.
Sparky died after being hit by a car.

‘You trust these guys?’ Sergeant Luke asked Chris as they sat in a Billings sushi place.
Sergeant Luke had come up with a schedule for the places for them to meet including places to eat outside of their secret headquarters to try and keep any eyes from seeing a routine with them.
‘Every one of them has been off the grid for years. They’ve been waiting their whole lives for something like this. Something that’s a real thumb up the nose to the establishment and not just games and picket lines,’ Chris
‘Give me name, age, and a general picture of who they are,’ Sergeant Luke
‘Faith Veitch, 27, she’s a pretty fucking good hacker. Darryl Rick, 23, hardware tech genius. Banks Roubeau, 30, artist and nurse,’ Chris
‘A team is who we live and die with. This is your first big choice in this and I just hope you are making a good one with these people,’ Sergeant Luke

Tin Universe Daily #249

#249

Now to the electrifying intro to the Tin Universe that I change a little from time to time but it’s still basically the same.
This reality came to become known as The Tin Universe by means of a traveler called Record. Hipster aliens call it The Tin but most hipsters are duck tailed fuck wipes so no one takes anything they say serious.
Record isn’t…? Wasn’t..? I’m a bit tense stupid sometimes and it’s hard to properly use tense with those who can travel through time. Anyways he wasn’t a hipster. Technically he had hillbilly blood in him but that’s a very long and complicated story that I’m sure not to get to one of these days.
What Record was, was lost at the time when he stumbled into this universe; which is really an embarrassing moment for a traveler who walks space, time, realities, and other such things. Not that he always knew where he was going, the truth was he didn’t most of the time, but lost to his lot is being stuck somewhere they know nothing about because escape of any kind comes from knowledge.
The embarrassment caused him to get extremely drunk with a group of Caspery scouts he met on a mining planet. After helping them sort out a mess he decided to travel with them for a bit and on a scientific expedition to a moon, not our moon, but a moon, that is when a party erupted.
Record was depressed at being lost and the Caspery scouts where bored it had been days and more since they had gotten the chance to shoot at anyone; so during the party when asked all the places he had travelled he went on a rant and when he got to where he was he said, “…and then you have this tin bit place.’
Of all the rewrites of this blasted intro was one was bone idle incoherence at its best.
And that young writers is what happens when a writer drinks coffee that was forty percent coffee and sixty percent cinnamon sugar. Does things to the brain you see.

BREAKING NEWS: As election for president gets closer in U.S. the crazy nature of America shows its strips.

A FIRST SHOT FIRED, PART SEVEN

Like something out of a cookie cutter action film or television episode from a show that will end up in the dollar bin at a library book sale, once when Sergeant Luke was in Washington DC for a conference on city police and how to handle Beyond Human situations, a conference sponsored by Homeland Security; which had panels on such subjects as Being A Benefit To Homeland Security, Enemy Combatants, When Pulpy Comes To Your City, and Don’t Let Media Cloud Your Thoughts (That Creates Dead Bodies.)
Where was I?
Ok.
Sergeant Luke had been there a day and could already tell the conference was nothing more than a propaganda push against any sympathetic feelings towards Beyond Humans.
It’s not like Sergeant Luke is a bleeding heart liberal when it comes to Beyond Humans. He voted for The Beyond Human Database Act but all the stuff that’s come after that including the disappearances, the prisons, the executions, the thought processes of turning the image of cursed everyday Americans into terrorists was vile in his eyes.
His views on Beyond Humans was solidified one night at the hotel bar. So far at the conference he was making friends bringing up human rights and due process, and was sitting alone in a booth.
The hotel bar was dark, decorated in a lot of dark reds and darker purples. Very 1970’s. Or 50’s. The place was normally filled with politicians and lobbyists so any city ordinances about smoking in such places didn’t apply here.
The loud noises of the bar were clinking glasses, flowing smoke, and chatter but a voice stood out to Sergeant Luke, the voice of one Detective Glenn from California.
He had met the fat, loud, and smelly Detective Glenn during a panel on The Coming Beyond Human Gang Problem (And How To Deal With It.)
Detective Glenn was all on the side of quarantining arrested Beyond Humans and Luke was against this as a lone voice and Detective Glenn confronted him after the panel for his dissention.
That confrontation ended with Detective Glenn on his ass.
And that’s what Detective Glenn was talking about in the bar. He was extremely drunk and pissed loud yelling about cops like Luke.
Luke just smiled and drank another beer. He would have been happy to sit and drink those beers and eat his burger and fries but the fat ass decided he wanted to walk from the bar and sit down in Sergeant Luke’s booth.
The instant of this man sitting across the table from him in such close quarters sent Sergeant Luke’s anger meter up.
“Sitting here all by yourself because you’re a lonely voice for the poor Beyond Humans?” Detective Glenn
“Drinking alone because you’re a complete asshole?” Sergeant Luke
“You lucky punched me,” Detective Glenn
“So always says the man who ends up on his ass,” Sergeant Luke
Before any more quips could be exchanged the smoke filled air of the bar was immediately replaced by a thick foam that hung in the air for a minute before falling down on everyone. The bits of the substance that touched skin burned them like a kind of acid but it only hurt with direct contact on skin.
Detective Glenn was screaming holding his face like a good deal of the others in the bar except for Sergeant Luke who only was hit by a few small splatters because he was wearing a baseball cap.
With all the screams of pain and panic a woman walked into the bar dressed in an all white suit. She was smiling, “One of the many varied ways I can cause others pain. You want to paint all Beyond Humans as killers. I’m going to show you a killer.”
Sergeant Luke slide out from the booth with his gun pulled, “Freeze right there or I shoot!”
“Well, well, one isn’t all whining and crying. Let me introduce myself, I’m Bonnie Girl.”
“Don’t make another move. You have attacked a room full of law enforcement. The only way you’re going to make it out of this alive is by surrendering to me right now,” Sergeant Luke
Bonnie Girl walked over to the bar area, “So I’m in danger?” she asked.
On cue all the people near the bar including the bartender burst into a green flame that only burned them and nothing else and it was burning really hot and turned them into ash very fast.
Sergeant Luke was thinking if he opened fire would it even make much of a difference.
“You might be thinking would shooting this person have any effect. The answer is no. You know one of these days people like me are going to organize and you will find out just what its really like to be scared of us,” Bonnie Girl
Sergeant Luke was startled as everyone else started choking.
“Tell everyone about me,” and with that Bonnie Girl disappeared in a twisting of winds.
Sergeant Luke called for backup from local police and helped with emergency personal but he was the only one to survive this attack. He didn’t know if it was the vision of Bonnie Girl but this attack, on this conference, helped stir anti-Beyond Human hatred even more.
The conference continued but Sergeant Luke left. He had planned to do so anyways being tired of everything but now he wanted to get out of town quick before anyone tried to use him to promote their own agenda.

Luke and Chris have been walking the streets of Billings all day and night with Sergeant Luke pointing out to Chris the local color and what to look out for, what cases they will be tackling, as in the things the police can’t and at times won’t get involved in.
This night in Billings was punctuated by a celebratory atmosphere as it was just announced that a major electronics manufacturer was moving operations from Florida and would be setting up in Billings creating two thousand new local jobs.
Well, in Billings. Melbourne Florida would be losing two thousand jobs.
Sergeant Luke showed Chris the places where ordinary citizens went to eat, drink, and relax. He also pointed out the locations were gang members liked to hang out. Where he might find an informant or two. Also the places to avoid because they are popular places for off and on duty police hangouts.
Luke wanted to make sure Chris knew that they wouldn’t be going after every law breaker. That they would be tacking certain sorts of situations such as people hiding behind the laws and manipulating it to their own advantage at the cost of the rest of the city and state.
He also wanted them to go after the criminals the police chose not to go after. The ones they seemed not to have the time and resources to address and those that for political reasons were avoiding.
But more than anything else Sergeant Luke wanted Chris to understand this was about finding a place inside of him, if it was there, to make him the protector this city needed during these twisted times.
As they head towards the home stretch to start this journey they are going on together Sergeant Luke wanted to see how Chris’s head was grasping what he would have to do.
‘You need to learn how to spot a threat before it emerges. Know what a threat is, when to take action and then figure out the circumstances that might unfold if you do act. Sometimes not acting is the safest and best move to make,’ Sergeant Luke
Walking through the city center of Billings.
‘Having a good eye for everything at all times isn’t about thinking the worst could happen at all times, that distracts you into reading things into situations,’ Sergeant Luke
‘Then how do you use your awareness?’ Chris
‘Do you play video games?’ Sergeant Luke
‘Mainly sports games,’ Chris
‘Well, everything is laid out in front of you as a quarterback. You still have to see and react. See and react. You will either have that instinct or not. In real life that’s what separates being able to play quarterback from being a professional quarterback. Planning, being ready, these come with training and hard work but to live and react to the height of any situation that comes from a place deep inside a man,’ Sergeant Luke
‘Or women,’ Chris
Sergeant Luke rolls his eyes.
Sitting inside a fast food restaurant having some appetizers.
‘Our mission must be one of planning strikes but sometimes plans clusterfuck up. Sometimes you are just thrown in cause sometimes a fire can spontaneously ignite around you without warning,’ Sergeant Luke
Chatting at a library.
‘This can’t be a job to you or me. This is our lives now. You have to be in this state of mind at all times. You are taking up this life,’ Sergeant Luke
‘So no vacations?’ Chris
‘Only on my birthday,’ Sergeant Luke said with a smile that was interrupted by a shushing librarian.
Walking down a dark alley.
‘The thing you’ll do will be walking into the fire. We can’t act like that isn’t what it is We will be screaming for the attention of crosshairs, drawing them away from the regular police at times. This will be making things build and boil over to where we are the issue for a lot of people. The thing people want to kill the most. Learn to love the muck, filth, and shadows, they can sometimes save you if you are on the short end of a beating stick,’ Chris
Driving back to Pompeys Pillar.
‘We are going into a modern war and need to fight it like insurgents and even insurgents need a support team if they wish to last past a few hit and run missions. This is not an individual sport and me and you won’t be able to do it alone,’ Sergeant Luke

Tin Universe Daily #224

#224

A FIRST SHOT FIRED
PART SIX

The days of simple and ordered are over.
Someone is playing with reality like an NRA members infant in daddies closet.

Warning, this ant no middle grade shit here.
And no shame either.

Two years ago Sergeant Luke was helping out with a stakeout of a hotel that was suspected of being the home base of a major organized drug operation, filled with meth labs.
Sergeant Luke had the idea to stake the place out and get evidence. This was because they needed ATF help with this. Going in without big time backup, against probably well-armed bad guys, might prove really disastrous with that many meth labs, all positional bombs ready to go off.
With budget cut any rules about single officer stakeouts has been waved but Sergeant Luke has been filling in on nights when they don’t have the staff for two officers. His men appreciate it a lot.
Tonight he’s working with a detective, a fresh transfer from New Orleans, one Detective Winecaster. Detective Winecaster was a good hire for Sergeant Luke. A highly decorated detective. He’s young. He is looking to make a difference but isn’t naïve, has experience but hasn’t become jaded yet.
The stakeout was going as most stakeouts go. A lot of picture taking. A lot of coffee and snacks. A lot of almost falling asleep and looking up other jobs online.
That was until the screams.
Luke and Winecaster exited their unmarked car as more screams were heard coming from different sides of the hotel.
Winecaster looked to his superior asking what the move is.
‘I’ll call you in. One scream seems to be coming from the office, cafeteria area. I’ll take that one. You check out the other side. Be very careful. Unless you directly see someone’s life in danger you don’t do anything until help arrives,’ Sergeant Luke told him.
‘Understood,’ Detective Winecaster
Winecaster ran off towards the side of the hotel to head around back, gun pulled; while Luke went in the direction of the offices cafeteria.
That would be the last time Sergeant Luke would see Detective Winecaster. He pulled his sidearm and entered the offices. It was dark so he pulled out his standard issue flashlight and started searching. He did that hand under hand thing with his gun and flashlight that you see in all the American crime shows.
Another scream let Luke know it was coming from the cafeteria which was to the side once he entered the office area.
The cafeteria was dark. He couldn’t see anything and didn’t really have the time to think about what could be going on when…
He has been in the middle of firefights and tossed out a few windows by really big guys hyped up on drugs. He has seen bullets that seemed to have minds of their own. But this one set of moments would change how he looks at the world in several ways.
First his flashlight went out. Then his gun was knocked from his hands but before he could make some kind of police statement about how anyone here was under arrest or something he was thrown by someone or something across the dining room area of the cafeteria.
Sergeant Luke landed on an old table that shattered into splinters with the impact.
He got to his feet trying to see anyone within the darkness, any movement at all using the little light that was in the room.
Then a scream again sounded out, followed by a voice, ‘These prisoners of our lives must be feed into the fires. I am that fire. They have awakened me.’
‘I’m B.P.D. No one likes what’s going on here. We only knew about it because of concerned citizens but vigilantism is not the way,’ Sergeant Luke shouted.
‘You will change your mind.’
‘And what makes you think that?’ Sergeant Luke asked.
‘Because I’m going to help change it.’
The next thing Luke remembered was waking up in an ambulance on its way to a nearby hospital. He read in reports filled that he was found in a ditch across the road from the hotel and that he must have gotten there by being thrown high by the massive explosion from a gas leak from the cafeteria that set the hotel ablaze and ignited all of the meth rooms.
The explosion shook houses, burst out windows for miles, and set the woods behind the hotel ablaze.
They never found any remains of Detective Winecaster.
The Sergeant never told anyone about the voice he heard. He thought it was probably a delusion brought on by the leaking gas.
He was wrong.

‘You know you get pissed when I don’t pay attention. Sergeant? Are you listening to me Sergeant?’ Chris
‘Yea, sorry, got distracted thinking about a case. Today was the anniversary of it,’ Sergeant Luke said, his thoughts returning to the here and now.
Chris and Sergeant Luke were sitting in a bar downing beer and hot wings.
‘Is it anything you wan…’ Chris was asking.
‘Nope.’ Sergeant Luke shut down this inquiry.
‘Ok.’ Chris
‘Repeat the question from before, I got distracted,’ Sergeant Luke
‘So what about Pulpy? If I go around doing this he’s liable to think I’m a Beyond Human and next thing you know I disappear up some backside of some secret prison.’ Chris said a little worried.
Sergeant Luke could tell Chris was a little nervous about the subject. Chris normally didn’t eat or drink more than you should but right now he was going on normal American and overfeeding himself the pitcher of beer and bottomless hot wings.
‘That’s why you’ll be masked to protect your real identity. If we have to we will change your total look if the heat gets too hot and the way you do things, make people think there is more than one person running around,’ Sergeant Luke
‘Speaking of masks?’ Chris said gaining a small smile.
‘Still working on that. I promise it will be practical and useful,’ Sergeant Luke swore.
‘Cool,’ Chris
‘We are also going to use the fact that Montana is one of the states fighting against the federal government to impose its own state Beyond Human laws. For the time being they have him staying out of Montana as a political stance,’ Sergeant Luke
‘I’ve come up with a name.’ Chris told his mentor.
‘And? What do you have in mind?’ Sergeant Luke asked.
‘Alcalde, it means…’ Chris
‘Sheriff, lawyer, and magistrate. Good fit to create a localized symbol. I like it,’ Sergeant Luke said, ‘Now, we need to order more wings. You ate all the first batch.’
